    Objective:

    The objective of the programme is to facilitate a shift towards alternative livestock farming practices in Nicaragua, so as to increase farm productivity, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and contribute to climate change adaptation needs.

    Activities: (2015 - 2017)
    The project is a roadmap to NAMAs in the livestock sector. This programme sets out to overcome a number of challenges in implementing NAMAs, including the lack of; available technical training, financial investment and evidence of long-term impact.

    The main outputs of the programme are:

    (i) Development of baseline and ‘sustainability’ scenarios, outlining the economic, social and environmental implications of today’s (baseline) versus alternative (‘sustainability’) farming practices;

    (ii) Preparation of ‘Sustainability roadmaps’, charting the steps required to implement one ‘sustainability’ scenario (including actors concerned, technologies involved, possible policy options and likely timeframes);

    (iii) Articulation of NAMA descriptions for key mitigation options in the sector, identified and designed through a consultative group established for the project.

    Capacity building lies at the heart of the programme’s approach with a focus on training and knowledge transfer to improve farming efficiency while reducing emissions. The programme sets out to work directly with the farmers but at the same time it focusses on some of the policy implications both across the livestock sector and nationally. In this way it will link bottom up initiatives with top down approaches.
