    Objective:

The objective of the NAMA is to support farmers to switch to low-emission farming.

    Activities: (2017 - 2022)
The Thai rice sector is not only responsible for almost 60% of Thailand’s emissions from agricultural activities, but is also the world’s 4th largest emitter of rice-related GHG – mainly methane.

The Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) a multi-stakeholder platform co-convened by UNEP and the International Rice Research Institute to promote resource efficiency and sustainability in trade flows, production and consumption operations, and supply chains in the global rice sector has a first global voluntary standard and successfully pilot tested the standard for the production of sustainable rice. It has been found that in irrigated rice cultivation, switching from conventional farming practices to applying an Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) on laser land-levelled fields can reduce significantly methane emissions.

The NAMA aims to outreach to 100,000 rice farming households in Thailand in shifting from conventional to low-emission farming and focus on 6 relevant provinces in the Central Plains of Thailand.

The United Kingdom and Germany have pre-selected 7 NAMA Support Projects, including this NAMA in Brazil, from the NAMA Facility’s 4th Call. These projects will receive funding by Germany and the UK of up to € 60 million to prepare their preparation development phase. Decisions on funding for implementation will be taken after the assessment of these proposals.

A meeting was held in July 2017 regarding the NAMA. The agenda of this meeting was to propose the establishment of 1) Policy Advisory Committee; 2) Steering Committee chaired by Permanent Secretary of MoAC; and 3) Working Group in which would be later appointed by a decision of the steering committee. As a result, the Minister appointed the Permanent Secretary to chair the Thai Rice NAMA Steering Committee. GIZ and RD would revise the Steering Committee Proposal and submit for the Minister‘s signature.

TheThai Rice NAMA Project is now in Detail Preparation Phase starting from 19 May until 19 November 2017.
